MILA
The way of the commune is the only way I know. Born into sin, I have to repent daily.
If we follow the laws of the Brothers, our sins will be forgiven, and they will take us with them to The Promised Land. All I have been taught is that I’m bad, shameful and a whore.
But, in the deepest part of my heart I can’t help but wonder about life. Is the way of The Order really the only way?
I listen to the teachings. I watch my sisters as they dutifully do what they’re told.
With every passing day I can feel my faith slipping away. How can I believe in something that feels so wrong? I feel like an outsider.
I feel like I don’t belong anywhere until I meet Liam. The first man to show me what love is turns out to be just like the rest of them.
I’m done putting my faith in men. I’ll save myself.

LIAM
Cults - I have this intense hunger for revenge against them.
Because of them, my sister took her own life.
Instead of getting my revenge, I get Mila. She changes things. But when I begin to unravel the secrets of her past that revenge comes back. I can’t forgive her for belonging to a cult. I blame her.
There’s only one problem, somehow that love I felt for her is coming back and my hate is turning to lust.
In the end I’m the one who needs saving.

Excerpt:

My first instinct is to cover myself, but the scorching look in his eyes makes me stand still.

My conscience screams at me that this is wrong, but it’s quickly silenced by the sinner in me.

“Don’t look at me like I’m your ticket to the promised land, babe. I’ll only lead you to hell.”

Heat spreads through my body and tiny tongues of desire lick at my skin.

“You make me want to be a bad girl,” I whisper. My voice is hoarse with sinful need.

I want to feel his touch. I want to be defiled by him.

My Review:

This was my second book from Michelle Horst and although I liked it a lot it was not what I expected from this blurb. It's a well written romance but for whatever reasons did I think it would be darker. The time seemed to move rather slowly which worked well for the tender and sweet moments between Liam and Mila but didn't work as well with the other parts in the book.

I liked the beginning and when Liam and Mila got to know each other but when the years passed I didn't feel like the characters grew up. They still acted like their teenage self what confused me because I always had the feeling everything happened while they were still teens and the time just didn't pass at all.

The Story:
Liam had been forced to live in a cult because of his mother's new husband. His father hadn't been strong enough to go against them to keep Liam and his sister away from this organization and their degrading way to live.
Now Liam has lost his baby sister because of them and he has to live with the guilt that he couldn't save her.
Mila grew up in a cult and when she learns how they treat her newlywed friend and how abusive men are to women she can't take it any longer. Now she lives in constant fear of the cult finding and punishing her for her sins. Though when she gets to know Liam, she feels the weight of fear and worry lift some fraction from her shoulders. But it doesn't hold for long until the shadows hovering above her come crashing down.

Thoughts:
This was a bit hard for me to rate because I expected something different from the book because of the blurb. So it may be my fault since the story was still well written and I enjoyed it a lot. It was a sweet romance/young adult novel but I just anticipated something darker even though the flashbacks and the panic attacks were no easy stuff. All in all it was a story of two people with horrid pasts that found and got to love each other.
"So there's this girl, right, and I'm crazy about her." Shit, my voice is trembling. I'm sure she can feel how my heart is racing right now. "She's funny and likes to climb trees, or a specific tree that I know of. She loves feathers, even the plain grey ones. She gets drunk really fast and then wants to take over planets." Her breathing calms to a few shaky ones. "I want this girl to take over my planet. I just don't know how to convince her to do that."
We just got a tiny glimpse at the beginning at what it meant to live in a cult and most of the book was about Mila having to deal with her panic attacks, constant fear and letting other people into her life. With her trust issues that was a huge deal for her.
Liam struggled with his guilt over the death of his sister and when he felt betrayed by Mila his world broke apart. Even though I partly understood why some things happened and that Mila was scared but all this back and forth drove me crazy. They should have just talked about everything in the first place and would have saved us a lot of time and nerves.
Both characters didn’t know at all what they wanted and often changed their minds within seconds.

There were a few things that just didn’t add up and I didn’t understand why Mila did or didn’t do some certain things and how she acted in some situations. It also didn’t add up for me why the cult went to such length and was so relentless. The final resolve felt sudden and not at all like a closure and wasn’t really satisfying. But, as we’ve learned from this story, we don't always get what we want.

I liked the easy conversations and when the dark thoughts lifted for a moment and pulled me into the light with Mila. The backstories from Liam and Mila were rather short, although enough at least from his part, but I wish we’ve gotten more of hers even though she told about some of what happened later on.

Anyway I still liked the romance part between Liam and Mila, especially when they met and at the party but their feelings went from one extreme to the next in just a short amount of time and it happened all too fast when I think back to what happened in just one day. There were a few twists in this story that I didn’t see coming and I loved it!
I’m excited for what’s coming next in this series!
