Book Review: Mismatch by Tracie Delaney

This was one hell of a suspenseful, fast-paced and fun read! Rupe’s story was full of surprises and had me on edge the whole time. Talk about unputdownable!

We already met Rupe in Cash’s story and know of his way to make light of everything, how he enjoys life to the fullest and that his wealth makes everything a hell of a lot easier for him. He’s not only very successful in business but also with women, so I was very curious which woman was able to catch him.
I have always loved Rupert Fox-Whittingham and I liked seeing him finally getting attached to one woman. The road to his happily ever after was not as smooth and easy as he'd probably wished for but it's definitely one of the reasons why he even found her. Life’s sometimes tough and Rupe learned the hard way that some things couldn't be bought and that money eventually had its limits. Even though it was sad to see Rupe down in a seemingly hopeless situation, I liked getting to know a different, more serious and thoughtful side of him.

Jayne was definitely right up Rupe’s alley because she was tough enough to not only stand her ground but also strike back to his flippant comments and sassy remarks. Her take-no-shit-from-nobody attitude was just one of her best characteristics and sure enough, Rupe – usually easily bored – was intrigued by her and the challenge she offered to him was too good to pass up on.

It’s surely no surprise when I say that I absolutely loved Rupe not only because he was funny, smart and good-looking but mainly because he had good manners and was old-fashioned. I like me some old-school manly man and I strongly believe that he could charm his way into any woman's pants. Mine for sure =P

The Story:
Rupe wakes up in a hotel room next to a dead woman. And as if this wasn't shocking enough, he can’t believe it when the police show up at his doorstep to arrest him with the murder of said woman.
His legal aid, Jayne Seymour - currently working through a divorce - is an independent woman, a workaholic and as tough as they come. But when her new client Rupert Fox-Whittingham is determined to take her out, no matter how often she declines, Jayne can't help but eventually succumb to his persistency and charm. Because one dinner should be manageable to survive, right?

Although Rupe now finds himself in a situation that he can’t control, neither with his money nor his wit, he very much appreciates the most intriguing woman he’s ever met and he’s more than tempted to turn her world upside down.

Thoughts:
I’m so happy that I’ve found this author and her books because her writing is captivating and highly entertaining, which makes reading so much more fun.

I liked that the story had a lot more depth than it first seemed. It was well thought through and not just about Rupe being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Also the easy and funny banter between the characters was what I loved the most.

Jayne was a great woman but scared to get hurt again so it took a while for her to find out that beneath Rupe’s layer of his flippant attitude was a pretty decent guy. I think he was perfect for her because she sure needed someone like him, someone to give her all his attention and who cared about her so much that he didn't let her push him away. There was no chance for her to not eventually open up to him.

Rupe on the other hand realized that his usual flippant self probably wouldn’t have helped him with someone like her. So he had to change his strategy which was kind of funny, because never would I have thought he would care what other people thought of him. But she was obviously a special person to him. Lucky her, he’s the whole package.

Coming to an end of my review I’d like to mention that although this is a standalone, I warmly recommend reading Cash’s story – before or after this read – because Rupe and Cash are two very different yet so similar characters who are impossible not to fall in love with.

I didn’t do it.

I never betrayed my friend.

Last year, I was kidnapped along with presidential candidate’s daughter Lindsay Bosworth, forced to help her assailants, my mother implicated in one of the biggest political scandals in American history.

I've been cleared of any wrongdoing, but that doesn’t matter. Once you’re tried by the media, you’re guilty as sin. The truth doesn’t get the public’s attention.

But shame? Shame sells.
And everyone assumes you’re tainted.

Now I have my own personal security team, courtesy of the United States government. Not the one you learned about in civics class, though.

I’m being tracked by the deep state. The shadow government. They’ve assigned Silas Gentian to be with me twenty-four seven. He thinks he knows everything about me – all of it bad -- and he does.

On paper.

Like everyone else, he assumes I’m a traitor. A backstabber. A betrayer. Someone who helped a group of violent psychopaths, puppets of powerful men in Washington who made me into a tool.

Yet I see how he looks at me. True desire can’t be faked.

Or hidden.

And that goes both ways.

He assumes I’m trying to fool him.
And he might be right.
But not for the reasons he thinks.

A Shameless Little Con is the first book in the Shameless trilogy by USA Today bestselling author Meli Raine.

DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER.
You’ll tell me you don’t… but you already think you know what my story’s about.

You have no idea.
Just like the people sitting in this courtroom.
She asked for it. That’s what they keep saying.

And no, it’s not because my skirt was too short or I was drunk at a party.
It’s nothing like that. It’s because of what I like and how I like it.

They’re judging me as I sit in the front row, my eyes drawn to the man on trial.
If I’d known it was going to end like this, I never would have gone home with him.
But he’s the type of man I just can’t say no to.

I wanted to feel his lips kiss down my neck.
I dreamed of running my fingers along the rough stubble on his jaw.
I craved his hands on me, pinning me down.
I needed to whisper his name in the dark, late at night.

You still think you know what happened? You don’t.
He’s innocent and I enjoyed every second I was with him.

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.

I was the awkward musician, and she was the high school queen.
The only things we had in common were our music and our loneliness.

Something in her voice gave me a hope I always wished to find.

And in a flash, she was gone.

Years later, she was standing in front of me on a street in New Orleans.
She was different, but so was I. Life made us colder. Harder. Isolated.

Caged.

Excerpt:

By the way, what happened to Todd’s nose?” I asked.
“I broke it,” Elliott said matter-of-factly.
“What? How? Why?”
He shrugged before turning to look out the window. “He called you a bad name.”
“What was it?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“Eli,” I started.
He turned my way and locked his hazel eyes with my browns. “Jazz…” He shook his head. “It wasn’t true.”
I swallowed hard, a big part of me certain Todd’s words held some form of truth.
Elliott saw it in me—my fear. He kept shaking his head and whispered, “I don’t feel sorry for you. Sometimes you look at me like you think I feel sorry for you, and I want you to know I don’t. I think you’re perfect the way you are.”
I quietly laughed at him repeating the words I’d told him earlier. A few tears rolled down my cheeks. “I’m a little messed up.”
“I know.” He nodded. “That’s why I like you.”
He went back to staring out the window, and I kept staring at him.
And there it was.
So small, so tiny, so real.
Love.
It wasn’t love, but it was the beginning of it.
I knew I was young, and I knew it was stupid, but in that moment, I began to fall in love with the quiet boy who quietly cared for me. The boy who was scared and still strong. The boy who stood up for me when he was surrounded by reasons not to do such a thing. I hadn’t known much about love. I hadn’t known how it looked, felt, or tasted. I hadn’t known how it moved, how it flowed, but I knew my heart was tight and currently skipping a few beats. I understood the goose bumps covering my arms. I knew this stuttering boy who was sometimes so scared was someone worth loving. He was worth being the first one I gave my heart to.
I knew Elliott Adams was love.
And I was falling into him so fast.

My review:

ALL OF THESE STARS for this PHENOMENAL READ!

WOW! This was definitely the best book in 2017 and one of the most touching I’ve ever read. I was blown by how emotional and realistic it’s been written. I don’t even know how to begin to explain how phenomenal this book was because no words would do it justice. Brittainy C. Cherry’s writing is so touching and beautiful; she has a true talent and is one of the very best writers that I know of.

The blurb didn’t give much away and left me curious at what I was getting myself into. In no way could I have been prepared for this amazing story. It showed me what it meant to be beautifully sad and taught me about real strength.

I usually write something about the story in my review but I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll just tell you to open up your heart and let yourself be moved by this incredible read.

Elliot’s character reminded me a lot about myself, though he has a lot more strength than I will ever have. He’s the most perfect character ever written, not because his life was perfect – it was far from it – but because he had a heart of gold.

All these characters, Elliot, Jasmine, TJ, Ray, Laura, Jason, Katie and all the others had so much love to give and cared so much about one another like a big family. They were definitely rich of love.

This was no easy tale but an emotionally painful and heartbreaking story about the most wonderful and realistically written people.

There was so much pain and heartache but also deep, pure and honest to God love. These innocent and vulnerable teenagers had it rough in their lives early on for different reasons, but they had found each other and gave each other strength, love and trust in their friendship. Elliot was such a sweet boy. My heart ached for what he was put through at school and I was amazed at how selfless he was despite everything. He didn't care what was being done to him as long as his loved ones were okay. He brought me to tears with his big caring heart and it broke my heart how horrible he was treated in school by those bullies.

Jasmine was a sweet girl and I could easily understand that she wanted to help Elliot. Her situation wasn’t so much easier with her mum blaming her for things she wasn’t at fault. I was just glad that she had Ray.

Their grown up selves were not as innocent anymore, had a lot more baggage to carry and to work through a lot, but no matter how thick the wall was they’d built around their hearts, a lot of restrained emotions were flowing through them.
‘You don’t see music, you feel it. Music doesn’t see color. Music transcends all stereotypes.’
Conclusion:
I don't need alphas, MCs or overdramatic storylines but exactly this! An honest, real life kind of story with genuine characters so humble and perfect, you can’t imagine that someone just made them up. A story so authentic and touching, you feel almost suffocated by all these overwhelming emotions swamping your body. This is an absolute must-read and re-read!

My review:

Let the torment continue…

What an absolute mindfuck! I’d be scared shitless and would have died a thousand deaths already having done all this to me.
But let’s just take a moment to appreciate this awesome cover!! Oh my!! I love it now even more after I’ve read the book =P

So, the story picked up where it last left off which I liked a lot, but I suppose it’s kind of required with this kind of story anyway.

We already know from the previous book who the puppeteer is and now another master was entered into the game. Very exciting!! The story was absolutely captivating and had me glued to the pages.

Although it was again a very short read, it was as intense as the previous ones but focused more on the mental aspect than the physical one. The captors wanted to finally break their puppets last resistance and played with their minds in a scary way.

Valerie, and her ever-present anger, was as arrogant as always, driven to ruin Ivy and Noah. Will she succeed with her cruel game in the end or do her dolls have a chance to escape in time? It keeps us guessing and hoping.

Ivy and Noah’s emotions were kept heightened from the drugs though it wasn’t just animalistic lust but also intense fear that kept them on their toes. It got a lot harder for them to keep their sanity and not break apart. Especially as they’re aware that eventually after all their torture, their deaths will await, because their suffering and obedience was never enough. The ultimate goal was always for them to die.

It feels like the books get shorter and shorter. Not sure about the actual length though, it just feels that way. I wished it was longer and finally gave us an ending or just some more though we did get a very short but very intense and edge gripping suspense, not to mention the cliffhanger at the end.

The authors really know how to keep this twisted game going and have the characters on the edge of losing all self-control.

Some very interesting events took place in this book and left me speechless at the end! It was absolutely killing me! I really need more! Give me more! Now! Pretty please! =P
'Slowly, a smile breaks free, and the evil, sinister creature in the mirror, the one with pure bloodlust in his eyes, smiles back at me cruelly.'

Excerpt:

“If you want to walk me, you can. But I can make it on my own.”
“Lead the way.”
I had to adjust myself; it was going to be an uncomfortable walk. When I glanced up, I got an eye full of her fantastic ass and had to catch up if I didn’t want fucking blue balls tonight.
When we were side by side, she cast me a look. “And don’t think you’re talking your way up to my room. It’s a boy-free zone.”
I chuckled. “You’ve made your point. Believe it or not, I don’t have to beg.”
It was her turn to laugh. “Your ego knows no bounds.”
“It’s not ego, Angel. It’s a fact. And though you are on a short list of girls who have turned me down since before high school, it’s cool.”
She stopped in front of a red brick building, and now I knew which building held her dorm. I filed that away for future reference.
“Well, it’s healthy you learn that not all women are susceptible to your charms.”
Her warm palm reached up and patted my cheek. I captured her wrist and turned it to press a kiss to the skin at the juncture of her hand and arm.
“Never say never, Angel. I might corrupt you yet.”

My review:

I can't tell you enough how glad I am that I stumbled upon this author's books a few years ago. And since this wasn't my first read by her, as I absolutely love her New York Crime Kings Series, I had higher expectations on this book than I'd normally have.
But Skyla Madi easily accomplished to surpass my expectations with this captivating, suspenseful and very sexy read.
Jai move aside, Ben is here! =P
“Hold on to your heels, Princess. Shit's about to get wild.”
At first I wasn't really sure what to expect because I haven't read lots of mafia books before and the mob is a rather vile and unpredictable bunch of people which cause a lot of death and destruction (at least in books and movies). So I worried a bit if the love story would suffer from this, but after I started reading, I soon found out that the book was nothing as I've expected but so much better.

Regardless the length of the book, the story had a great pace and although the characters had an early sexual encounter, it wasn't an insta-love story. Actually, I'd say the book wasn't a love-story at all but more about a forbidden feeling towards one another forming into an ever-growing bond.

It was about Sera trying to break free of the strong hold and short leash her father had her on. She's young and envied her carefree friends because being the daughter of the mob boss entailed a certain rule of etiquette and always brought harsh consequences to every 'wrong' decision.
Though one night changed everything when she stumbled upon Ben, whom she never expected to see again after a drunken night between the sheets. Man was she in for a surprise.

Ben wasn't continuously as strong a character as I'd expected him to be. He'd have preferred to go back to the army where he belonged because no other job could give him the same satisfying feeling, but his promise held him back. He seemed torn and lonely. I thought that he was rather sad at times but this had me love him even more. Don’t’ get me wrong, he was physically strong and had great personality traits but his heart ached for love and attention which was reflected in his actions.
'There's something about her, something that says, “you can't touch me.” I want to touch her. I want to completely ruin her for anyone else. Ever.
One might argue that Sera was immature or careless but I wouldn’t necessarily agree because putting myself in her shoes I probably would be as rebellious as she was, though she clearly was younger than Ben.
'Being the only child – and only daughter – of Marco Ventilli, Don of the Vegas family, is no walk in the park.'
I loved this book so much! I almost highlighted everything LOL not really constructive but I couldn't help myself. I just loved every word of it!

I was excited about the characters’ first encounter, nervous about Ben working for the mob, anxious about Sera’s dad finding out about them, scared for Ben’s life and swooning over the epilogue. I believe this sums it up pretty nicely. So, do yourself a favor and pick up this book, because you will be glad you did!
