Excerpt:

“Good evening,” he says, as casually as if he saw me last week instead of six months ago.
“Christopher,” I say, in case he hasn’t noticed. A table like this is reserved for VIPs or very special guests. Or ones with deep pockets. “This is the chef’s table. We’re sitting at the chef’s table in Koi.”
“Is that good? I thought they just ran out of regular tables.”
“Did you just make a joke. Oh my God. You did.”
The chef chooses that moment to introduce himself, a rather effusive man with a comforting smile and a thick Japanese accent. He says he’ll forgive that we drink champagne as long as we try the sake pairing he sends with every course. And he personally serves the amuse bouche, a tuna sashimi lollie on a fennel cilantro salad with ponzu dressing that makes me moan despite myself.
“Dear God,” I say when we’re alone again, my eyes still closed with the wonder of that single bite. There’s salt and citrus, and basically this is what heaven tastes like. “Did you spend all two billion dollars to get this table? Because it’s worth it.”
When I open my eyes Christopher is watching me, a strange expression on his face. He hasn’t touched the plate in front of him. He seems more interested in the way that I dip my finger in the ponzu dressing and lime foam to savor the last drops. I’m not sure that love is on the table, but if the glitter in his eyes is anything to go by, sex is definitely an option.
“One billion,” he says, almost absently.
I blink. “What?”
“Only one billion is mine. The other half belongs to Sutton.”
It’s like a bucket of cold water dumped over my head. “Why did you bring me here?”
One dark eyebrow rises. “You’re the one who insisted we meet in person.”
“And you’re the one who brought me here.”
The long pause that follows isn’t filled with hearts and roses. He does not secretly love me, and I feel like a fool for even considering the possibility. Because he took me out to dinner? It’s really a good thing I don’t date much, because I’m terrible at it.
“I invested in the restaurant,” he says finally. “It helps to have your take.”
“Because I have such a refined palate?”
“Because you were born rich,” he says, his voice flat. “You know what rich people like.”
It takes my breath away, and I’m left staring at him with the most incredible taste on my tongue. That’s all I am to him? A rich girl with nothing better to do with my time than give him advice on his new restaurant? Meanwhile I was gullible enough to think he actually wanted to spend time with me. It isn’t right. It isn’t fair, but then Christopher Bardot has never played fair.

My review:

I anxiously awaited this sequel because I desperately wanted to know how this love triangle was going to end. Survival of the Richest was the first book I’d read by this author and I loved it so much that I was a little disappointed that book #2 had lost some of the magic from the first one although it was still captivating at times. I was especially intrigued by Sutton and couldn’t wait to find out who Harper was going to choose in the end and hoped that there wasn't a bad outcome.
'Money comes easy, but love is the elusive dream, the one thing always out of reach.'
Although there were some very emotional parts that broke my heart and brought tears to my eyes, I couldn't give this book a higher rating. The story was turning in a circle and dragging for most parts of it. The last 20% were the ones that had my heart, although the ending was very sudden und not satisfying enough for me. It’s not that there was an open ending but it just happened so quickly without any explanation or confession of anybody. That's not how a love triangle should end for me. Not if it doesn't want to leave me frustrated.
'I don't know how to love someone without the taint of money. I don't know how to have a relationship with a man where I'm not waiting for him to leave.'
I was slightly annoyed at Harper that she acted so selfish because she wanted Christopher but kept Sutton close all the same. She obviously would have acted differently with Sutton if Christopher wasn't in the picture and I believe that she wouldn't have looked twice at Sutton then. This really saddened me because he was my favorite person out of those three.
And the icing of the cake was that Christopher was never nice to Harper and even said something horrible and mean, although he had the decency to apologize afterwards, but she only had eyes for him, whereas Sutton was nothing but a good man compared to Christopher. Still, Harper couldn't understand that the only 'bad' thing Sutton did was only meant to keep her from hurting. So, why couldn't she forgive him? She was only ever angry at him and had her eyes set on Christopher. This wasn’t even anything new as the same was true in the first book but it annoyed me nonetheless. Harper was desperate for attention no matter from whom. This woman was insincere and selfish through and through.
'PS. You are the most self-centered, arrogant bastard I've ever met.'
This book wasn’t much of a romance story though it was well written and the characters were intriguing, but they still didn't know what they wanted. The author obviously knows how to write push and pull scenes and the sex scenes were very hot!! There was a lot of physical attraction but lacking in emotions as the characters were all rather closed up. I have to admit that I understood the pent up emotions, that there were feelings locked up and hidden, anger and sorrow, unrequited love, the pain of love and loss. The hurt of life. But the ending was too sudden and I did not know where the love suddenly came from because there was none in the entire book.
'That's how I can clear a room, ladies and gentleman. Welcome to the Harper St. Claire show.'

Book Review: Craving Dragonflies by Terri E. Laine

10 *fanfuckingtastic* Stars

I had been waiting forever for this story and it was absolutely worth it!! Sawyer and Ashton will always be my favorite book boyfriends. I love them with all my heart and I feel very protective of them. From the very beginning when they appeared in this series I was enchanted by them. So, when this story drifted into darker territory (which I anticipated, considering what I already knew about Ashton), my heart broke irrevocably into thousands of tiny pieces when I read what Ashton had been through in his younger years. I knew certain things would happen but it didn’t lessen the ache and pain I felt with him. And although I expected this story to be very raw and touching, I did not count on it to be so deeply emotional and affecting.
‘Fate had only ever been a bitch to me. I didn’t expect anything less.’
Ashton's story brought me to tears. It was painful to read at times but it was also hopeful and beautiful in so many ways.
‘Rain was one thing that didn’t burn when it touched my skin.’
Obviously, Sawyer played a big part in this book and he even managed to burrow himself deeper into my heart. I knew from his story how selfless and caring he was but witnessing his part in saving Ashton was heartbreakingly beautiful. Those two boys totally captured my heart.

Part of why I love Ashton so much comes from the connection I feel to him and how similar he is to me in so many ways. Willow as well though because she caught me by surprise. I was very anxious with whom Ashton would end up with but I think that Willow was just perfect. She was no arrogant or showy bitch but rather an inconspicuous and very sweet person who showed compassion to every living no matter how small or seemingly insignificant to others. I liked her a lot and approve of her for Ashton. =P
‘I felt too visible, longing all my life not to be seen at the same time, hating to be alone in my own skin.’

There were some sensitive scenes in this book which had me break out in goosebumps and tears because of the rage filling me. I have no words to describe it but Ashton’s story brought me to my knees and ripped me in shreds. It was beyond heartbreaking, so it might sound bad but I don’t mean it to, when I say that this was the most perfect outcome of a story for him. It’s tragic, but in a way that’s exactly his signature.
‘When you love someone so unconditionally, the consequences of what they needed from you didn’t matter even knowing I could never have what I wanted.’
The Story:
Willow didn't have it easy with Ash because there wasn't just another girl but a boy that meant the world and so much more to Ashton. But that wasn't even all of it, as Ash still struggled with the demons of his past. He's only ever known to follow Sawyer who had taken the lead. Now, since Sawyer cut the ties to Ash he feels lost, alone and abandoned by his best friend. He's hurt and doesn't know how to live his life without him because he can’t remember a time when he wasn't there. It's hard enough even before Willow became a constant in his thoughts and then it got a lot more complicated and confusing for him.
‘I’ve relied on his being there for so long, I can’t see what life looks like without him.’
Thoughts:
The slow burn romance was expected, as well as the fact that Ashton needed to find himself first to get his life under control. I knew this wasn't going to be an easy or light read but rather a tough story because Ashton was a very complex character. The author did a fantastic job and surpassed all my expectations with this phenomenal book. Even now I struggle to find the right words to say. Ash’s story was beyond perfect. No matter how heartbreaking it was, this story had Ash written all over it. Perfectly imperfect and absolute perfection.
When you've read the series and know Ashton and his struggles I'm sure that you'll understand what I mean.

This is definitely a must read book and one of the best releases of 2018!! But I recommend reading the previous books first (if you haven’t already) before going into Craving Dragonflies because it would give a better understanding of Ashton and Sawyer’s intricate friendship, although there was a lot explained about their history in this book as well.

My review:

What a fast-paced, page-turning and quick read. I loved the cars, the races, the family drama, the bonding between the characters, and the secrets. I couldn't help but be pulled into this story and be fascinated by all that was going on.
‘Adrenaline soars through my body. This is why I do this. This is my high.’
Austin had two faces - the one of the famous and rich Mr. Sexton, and the one hidden behind his hoodie when he was racing down the streets of San Francisco in this ’69 Chevy Camaro.
When a girl suddenly stepped out onto the track and interrupted his race, Austin would have never believed that she was the one to change his entire world.
‘Everyone here knows me as Falcon, the undefeated street racer, and not Austin Sexton, middle son of one of the most prominent families in San Francisco.’
Jalynn was a short-tempered and hot-headed kind of girl; her emotions were always boiling close beneath the surface. She was angry at Austin quite a lot and I feared that she would bite his head off a time or two. To be honest, I wasn't very fond of her in the first half of the book but grew to like her more after it seemed that she got her anger under control.
‘Last night, I didn’t know his name, but now, I feel like my world just exploded.’
There was more to the story than just the obvious about the street racing, and I was very surprised by the depth and emotions this story contained. Austin was not only the tough guy he seemed to be on the surface because he still fought the demons of his past. It gave the story a lot more meaning, also with the conflict of Beckett and his own struggles, which was perfectly woven into the book.
‘Adrenaline soars through my body. This is why I do this. This is my high.’
The Sexton family was a very interesting bunch and I can't wait to read more about them. I’m sure there is a lot of trouble and drama ahead. Bryce had me intrigued and I can't wait to get to know more about him. I think I’m even more excited about his book, now that I got a glimpse of him, than I was with the first book.

My review:
'The angels were in a hell of a good mood when they made him.'
Since I read all books by this author without knowing what they’re about, it’s always a new adventure. In this case, I found myself in a whirlwind of emotions. Emma grew up in a violent and abusive household which was hard to read about. I was crying for her and praying that she would find a way out. When she did, she found a heroic man who gave her hope and trust and safety in a way she never felt before. Their connection was there right from the start and only grew stronger as did their feelings for each other as well as Emma’s self-confidence. You could say that sweet Emma started to blossom by his hands as he guided her out of the dark and into the light.
'Life has taught me that the people who are supposed to protect you are the ones who will hurt you the most.'
Although I felt with the characters and was captured by the story, I wasn’t entirely convinced of how fast everything went down. Deer-in-Headlights Emma and Detective Aiden Holden happened pretty fast when they confided in each other after the second day. I understand that she wanted to be brave and try out new things but on her first day she was more than just brave, she was reckless and threw herself at a man she didn’t even know. She was lucky that it didn’t end badly for her.
So, anyway, I really enjoyed this story but their relationship could have taken a step back for my liking, especially considering her upbringing.
No matter how much Emma developed throughout the story and that she eventually freed herself of her mother's hold, I missed the healing part. When did she consciously deal with what she went through at home and also during this story? I can only imagine how traumatized she was and I desperately wished for her to get professional help. The story had some very dark content and I felt that it wasn't properly dealt with by the characters. But that's just my opinion.
'I've always loved being a cop, but she wakes up something else in me. A need to take care of someone else besides myself.'
I could have overlooked how Aiden didn't respect Emma's privacy when he looked through her stuff but another reason for my rating was how contradictory Emma's behaviour was. Or maybe it just seemed that way because the writing changed from time to time. Although it was pretty well written in general, it sometimes changed drastically between a 5 and a 3 star read for me. But all in all it was a great story and I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.
'Love doesn't break you down, but instead lifts you up, making you stronger, because you've finally found someone to believe in.'
Please don’t hate me! I’m frustrated with myself that I could not turn off my thoughts to enjoy this great story more. I scrutinized everything too much and therefore ruined the story for myself. So please, don’t let my review keep you from reading this book.

My review:

Wow. A beautiful, very inspirational, and emotional story.

I was amazed and slightly overwhelmed by this. Although this was fiction, I strongly believe that good people like Jude or Father James exist in our world.

I love stories with a meaning and this one had a beautiful message. Our world would be so much better when people judged less and helped more.

It's not just about giving to others though, but also about having faith and trust in the people who love you, that they catch you when you fall.
'It felt as though she could actually see me, the person, the human beneath the well-worn clothing and the unruly beard.'
This book had me in tears quite a lot, especially the scenes that were laden with heavy emotions hit me out of nowhere, but this story was also inspiring and somehow hopeful.

The romance may have come a bit short but it didn't lessen the quality of this well written story. The characters weren't free of self-doubt but very modest, slightly stubborn, yet wonderful individuals. Both had secrets which made them cautious around other people in fear of being revealed, but at the same time made them more aware of the other person's aloofness. I liked that the heroin was saved by the hero at first but turned the tables later on, so she wasn't the usual damsel in distress. Jude and Faith gave each other the comfort they didn't know they were craving.
'We're both concealing something from the rest of the world, so afraid to be judged for it.'
Fear not, despite my mentioning of the shortage of romance, there were some very hot scenes which will have you fanning yourself! The build up of tension was heightened by the fact that the characters weren't all over each other from the beginning, which made the spark between them break out into an inferno when it finally happened.
'Her eyes, a deep golden-brown hue with traces of green, tracked my movements and absorbed each word I spoke with an intensity I've never before experienced.'
The secondary characters made the book even better, if that's at all possible. Father James and his advice, he just always knew the right things to say, as well as a certain someone from a previous book I was happy to see again.

Jude was more than just selfless, he was the most altruistic person although he’s homeless, living on the streets, and even gave others the little he had left when he felt like they needed it more than him. But that's not all. There were all kinds of people in need and he was not one to think twice about helping in any way possible, even while he relied on help himself. Jude's a wonderful person and so good at heart although he didn't think so of himself because there's a reason why he chose to live this way. Life has dealt him a bad hand and he believed he's at fault and had to endure penance for it. Yet, he was still too prideful and stubborn for his own good.
'This is my mission. To not only look evil in its face and confront it, but to also protect those who cannot protect themselves.'
I highly recommend this story which was the cure of my latest book hangover. I’m sure it will touch a lot of hearts.

Release Blitz: Flirting With Fire by Piper Rayne

Flirting With Fire
by Piper Rayne
Series:
Blue Collar Brothers #1
Release Day: September 13th, 2018

Blurb:

Everyone knows that if you play with fire you’ll end up getting burned…

What happens when you attend a first responder’s bachelor auction with your best friends? Well, if your name is Madison Kelly like me, your friends end up bidding on a date for you with your high school crush.

That’s right. Even back when I was ‘Fatty Maddie’ to all my classmates, I had eyes for the quarterback of our football team. Not like I was the only one.

Mauro Bianco may fight fires for a living, but he still sets my heart ablaze. One look at the rugged, muscular man he’s turned into and I want to slide down his pole.

One date. That’s all I’m committed to. A few hours and I can tuck him back into that tattered old shoebox in my closet.

As always, the universe has other plans. I never would’ve predicted that in a matter of days he’d turn from my dream guy into my enemy.

Excerpt:

My brothers widen their stances, share a look of amusement and cock their eyebrows at me.
“Hate to break it to you, but Maddie didn’t bid on you. Lauren did.” Luca laughs while Cristian chuckles.
“I’m going out with a Madison and she didn’t go to our high school. Which reminds me.” I pull out my phone.
“Maddie is Madison, you idiot,” Luca says. “Her and Lauren were my year.”
“I went to high school with Madison?” I try to let her face come back to me, and though I can picture her bright blue eyes and long chestnut hair, nothing about her is familiar from high school.
“Yes, but she definitely wasn’t hanging out at the bonfires and football pep rallies.” Luca grabs his helmet off his bike. The only responsible thing I’ve seen him do in the last few years.
“Well, shit and she doesn’t even want to go out with me? Her friend bid on me?”
Luca straddles his bike with a grin. I look over to Cristian, but he’s putting his shirt back on and starts fiddling with his earbuds. They obviously think this conversation is over.
“Yeah, but we’re all in the same boat.” Cristian’s thumb moves over his phone screen. “Maddie’s awesome and I think you’ll have a good time with her.”
“She seemed pretty quiet and way too accommodating,” I say.
Luca kicks his stand up, letting the bike rock a little under him.
Cristian’s hands freeze on the screen of his phone. “And that’s bad?” he asks.
“I want a woman who knows what she wants. Has her own damn opinions. Doesn’t just agree with everything I say.”
Cristian peeks over his shoulder, a look of amusement that matches Luca’s. “You want a girl to come up and grab your nuts?”
“I want a girl who knows what her favorite food is, has an opinion about where she wants to go for dinner, likes whatever sports team she likes and doesn’t default to my favorites.” I stuff my hands into my pockets, digging out my keys for my truck.
“Well then, Maddie might not be the one. Like I said, she’s nice.” Cristian slaps me on the shoulder. “Treat her good though, okay?” He inserts one earbud.
“What do you think I’m going to do, leave her in Garfield Park?”
He puts his other earbud in. “That’s not even funny man. I have a friend in that district and the shit that goes down there...” He shakes his head.
Cristian loses the entire point of my statement—the fact I’m not a jackass. I’m not Luca.
“It’s one date,” I say. “And who knows, maybe she’s nice but still has a wild streak.”
Christian again glances over to Luca who’s smiling like he’s fucking Mickey Mouse.
“Well, good luck on your date,” he says.
Cristian jogs away and Luca’s bike starts up.
I head to my truck.
The conversation is over, but I’m curious now.
Where’s my damn yearbook?
